According to a reliable source the Second National Operator (SNO) may have its own ADSL offering ready before the end of 2006. In an email from an SNO employee it says that “Our [SNO] ADSL services are currently planned to be launched towards the end of 2006.”
The SNO said that they are looking at launching their first wholesale products towards the middle of this year, with business and residential offerings following in the next two quarters.
“As the SNO expands its foot-print across the country in 2006-07, we plan to introduce a variety of retail services for the benefit of individual consumers. However, in order to ensure that the SNO customers experience nothing but the very best, we intend to roll-out our consumer services in stages, starting with basic voice telephony and Internet access in the major cities of South Africa,” the SNO website states.
The launch date for the Internet access services is given as the 4th Quarter of 2006, which gives a further indication that Telkom may face competition in the ADSL before the end of the year.
The SNO is making its broadband intentions clear with the statement “In due course, the SNO will also provide true broadband Internet access services with voice capabilities.”
These 'value-added voice services' will most likely be available in 2007.
